The Background: This will be presented in drama form today.

(Time, 11:05 PM on December 31st 1999; Mario's pad)

DK: This was a great idea, Mario.

Yoshi (agreeing with DK): Yeah. Great Y2K party.

Luigi: What, are you two crazy? This party stinks.

Mario: Luigi, shut up. Let's just get on with the game.

(Playing Mario Party, one of their favorite get-together games, the time seemed to fly by until...)

(Time, 11:59 PM: same day and place)

Yoshi: Another star for me! That makes 5.

Luigi: But I’ve got over 150 coins. And I’ve got 4 stars.

DK: I’ve got six stars. Now lets get on with the game.

(Luigi rolled and... BZZZZZT! The screen went black.)

Luigi (screaming): WHAT?!?!

Toad: Y2K bug... we lost track of time.

Mario: It doesn’t matter. I was going to win anyway.

(A bunch of "No, I was winning!" and "No, me!" were being yelled by everyone)

Toad: I have an idea. Settle it in the ring. Have a Party Match. Whoever has most kills and stars at the end wins.

All (but Toad): I like it.

(Time, 12:00 Noon on January 1st 2000; my home)

(I was quickly told of the upcoming match, so I had to get to the SSB stadium quickly. I made it an hour before the match. The "SSB Superpowers" also attended this historic match-up.)

(Time, 4:30 PM: same day; Peach's Castle Arena)

Toad: You each have three lives. The items are set on low and are all stars. You get one point for each star you collect and 1-4 points depending on your place at the end of the match. Any questions? (waits five seconds) Good. Now, LET THE CARNAGE BEGIN!!!

    At the start of the fight, DK immediately wound up for a great punch, but Yoshi kicked him before he got it off. The Marios started hammering away at each other, M40 Lu27 DK20 Y34. A few hits between each group were exchanged while a capsule fell onto the screen, M80 Lu57 DK48 Y62. DK picked it up and smashed the capsule open on Yoshi’s forehead, and the star that came out of it bounced across the field. Luigi grabbed the star and took this opportunity to head-butt Mario out of the arena, M0 D1St0 Lu57D0St1 DK48 D0St0 Y85 D0St0.

    Yoshi jumped up and got a butt-slam off on DK, but Luigi ran in and did his "running multi-punch". After a few hits to Luigi, Mario came down from the sky and got off a head-butt to DK. The monkey is outta there, M0 D1 Lu89 D0 DK0 D1 Y95 D0.

    Luigi ran over to Mario for a fire uppercut, as a capsule fell into the way. Luigi’s uppercut hit the capsule, and Yoshi ran to catch the star, M30 St0 Lu89 St1 DK0 St0 Y95 St1.

    DK came down and got hit by Yoshi a few times. But Yoshi’s star quickly ran out, enabling DK to throw him off the edge. The Mario brothers were battling in the bottom field at this time, M48 D1 Lu117 NDD0 DK38 D1 Y0 D1.

    A few more hits occur down in the bottom field with DK kicking Luigi and grab-throwing Mario, damaging both of the plumbers. DK then landed his Kong Punch on Mario, sending him to the wild blue yonder, M0 D2 Lu136 D0 DK38 D1 Y0 D1.

    As Yoshi comes back down he picks up a crate while Luigi is running from DK. A throw from the crate blasts Luigi away and injures DK. Yoshi gets his second star from that crate as well, M0 D2St0 Lu0 D1St1 DK52 D1St0 Y0 D1St2.

    As Mario came down he got relentlessly attacked by the invincible Yoshi, while DK picks up another crate on the bottom level. DK threw the crate on the ground and ran to the star, but Mario jumped down and grabbed the star first. He takes this opportunity to utterly destroy DK, but Yoshi managed to escape with few hits. Luigi came down and took a few shots on the now-vulnerable Mario (about 10 seconds later), M57 D2St1 Lu0 D1St1 DK0 D2St0 Y15 D1St2.

    Mario and Luigi are going at it but Yoshi grabs a capsule and throws it at them. Mario got the pain, while Luigi got the star, M82 St1 Lu35 St2 DK0 St0 Y15 St2.

    Luigi throws Mario over the edge, but he manages to come back...next to Yoshi. The tough dino slurp-n-burped the "Red Italian" for the out-of-game KO. DK also came back from heaven and punches Yoshi, M(OUT) St1 Lu35 D1St2 DK0 D2St0 Y26 D1St2.

    Yoshi used his Egg Swallow attack on DK, immobilizing him long enough for a butt-slam. Luigi runs over to another fallen capsule, breaking it for a third star. DK breaks out, followed by more punches and kicks on the top with Luigi being unscathed during this time, Lu35 D1St3 DK73 D2St0 Y68 D1St2.

    DK grabs Yoshi and throws him off, stealing another life. He taunts, while Luigi runs to the edge to grab a capsule. He throws it at DK, and the star bounces away from everyone, Lu35 D1St3 DK96 D2St0 Y0 D2St2.

    Yoshi has come back onto the field. As Luigi and DK exchange blows. Luigi throws DK out of the game, but Yoshi’s butt-slam knocks Luigi away, Lu0 D2St3 DK(Out) St0 Y0 D2St2.

    It’s down to two fighters and it’s anyone’s game. Luigi and Yoshi start hammering away at each other, Lu19 Y19. A few punches and kicks later Luigi and Yoshi are knocked to opposite ends of the field. A capsule falls down near Luigi and he throws it at Yoshi. Yoshi dodges and grabs the star that pops out, Lu34 St3 Y36 St3.

    Both fighters have one life left and equal stars. Whoever gets KOed next loses. Yoshi starts chasing Luigi, but the neglected one is too fast. Yoshi can’t catch Luigi. Luigi runs at Yoshi as soon as the star has run out and a Fire Uppercut sends him into the background, Lu34 D2St3 Y(OUT) St3.
